Tamworth
A quiet 1.5 mile lead-required nature trail near Tamworth, with glimpses of fishing lakes and a dog-friendly café at the entrance. Kept natural and a little muddy underfoot, it's a nice change of scenery rather than a regular go-to.
Tamworth Castle Grounds, Tamworth
A flexible riverside walk through the heart of Tamworth, taking in the Castle, bandstand flowers, bridges over the River Tame and Anker, and open grassy areas. Great for a short confidence-building wander or a longer explore, with No.18 café for a post-walk hot chocolate.
Loughborough, Leicestershire
A steady climb up to one of Leicestershire's best viewpoints, complete with torrential rain, glorious sunshine and Murphy refusing to move from under a tree until peer pressure from passing dogs got him going again. Wide paths, a proper summit scramble and an ice cream van waiting in the car park at the end.
Hinckley, Leicestershire
A big, multi-entrance walk on the edge of Hinckley with wide open common on one side and shadier woodland on the other. Murphy spent most of it being physically restrained from diving into what used to be a stream.
Whitwick, Leicestershire
A proper little local wood we navigated the scenic way, via the back of some houses, before stumbling on the actual entrance. Just over 1.5 miles of shady woodland paths, best saved for after a decent bit of rain, but not too much!
Swadlincote, Derbyshire
A proper little pocket of woodland right on the edge of Swadlincote town centre — one mile, thirty minutes, and about forty separate reasons for Murphy to stop and investigate a tree root. Squeezed in on the way home from Just for Pets, and quiet enough that we didn't pass a single other dog.
Wylde Green Road, Sutton Coldfield
A 200-acre country park just a mile from Sutton Coldfield town centre, with open meadows, woodland cut-throughs, wetlands and Plants Brook running through the middle. A long-time favourite for the family with routes varied enough to never feel repetitive.
Rosliston, Derbyshire
154 acres of woodland, meadow and lakeside trails near Swadlincote, with waymarked routes from ½ mile to 2½ miles — though half the fun is going off-piste down the smaller trails. Flexible enough for a 45-minute leg stretch or a couple of hours of proper exploring.
Leicestershire
Ancient woodland that genuinely feels medieval — medieval stones, undulating terrain with roots and rocks, open countryside sections. Murphy took to it like he'd spent every summer there. Which he hasn't.
Ticknall, Derbyshire
A varied National Trust trail mixing open countryside, woodland and gravel paths — long stretches perfect for off-lead time, with a couple of sheep-fields where leads are required. Busy near the start, quieter further out, with dog bowls and ice cream waiting at the finish.
Barton Marina, Burton on Trent
A peaceful early morning walk around two large lakes with flat paths and woodland trails. The route takes you through the marina with lovely water reflections and plenty of opportunities for sniffaris.
Coalville, Leicestershire
A former colliery site that's been transformed into 40 hectares of woodland, meadows and ponds. Murphy had brilliant space to explore, proper variety in terrain, and was only mildly devastated he wasn't allowed in the water.
Thornton, Leicestershire
A flat reservoir loop with gravel paths, big skies and one Cavapoo who decided this was a mission, not a meander.
Market Bosworth, Leicestershire
Open grassland, wildflower meadows, woodland trails and a lake loop. Murphy had a mild existential crisis about all that space until he watched another dog demonstrate how zoomies work.
Stanton by Bridge, Derbyshire
What started as a promising woodland walk recommendation quickly turned into a car park treasure hunt, scrubland detour and a slightly scruffier National Forest experience than expected. Murphy, however, had an excellent time.
Staunton Harold, Derbyshire
Long grass meadows, established woodland with a stream running through, and more butterflies than Murphy knew what to do with. A brilliant variety walk that kept both of us interested — even if the Disney moment we were hoping for never quite materialised.
Swithland, Leicestershire
Ancient woodland with full canopy cover, wide open glades, streams for splashing and paths that connect through to Bradgate Park. £2 all day parking — but take coins, because the phone signal has other ideas.
Ibstock, Leicestershire
A peaceful wildlife reserve with a lake loop, woodland paths and a huge open meadow. Beautiful for evening walks, but dogs must stay on lead throughout and there are no poo bins.
Foremark, Derbyshire
Woodland paths, gravel tracks and a Very Important Pooches hydration station. Murphy approved of the facilities. Less keen on the fact the reservoir itself is strictly look-don't-touch.
Normanton le Heath, Leicestershire
A peaceful Woodland Trust walk with huge meadows, woodland trails and enough space to make you forget you're only a few miles from home.
Newtown Linford, Leicestershire
830 acres of ancient parkland, roaming deer, historic ruins, crystal-clear streams and one Cavapoo who may have found his favourite walk ever.
Thringstone, Leicestershire
A beautiful woodland walk with a gorgeous stream, stunning bluebells, and the Grace Dieu Viaduct. We managed the viaduct but not the ruins — Murphy + teenagers + new environment = chaos on repeat.
Albert Village, Leicestershire
A stunning 2-mile lake loop with wide flat paths, loads of splash opportunities and shaded spots. Perfect for warmer weather walks and any season really. Free parking and plenty of route extensions including to Conkers.

This one has a bit of everything — and on a sunny bank holiday, it definitely delivered. Starting on the old railway line, through Donisthorpe Woodland Park (stream included), and looping round to the peaceful, scenic Ashby Canal.

Winding woodland paths, old railway tracks from its mining history, and peaceful clearings tucked away from the world. Beautiful space with loads of shade and room to roam.
