# Calke Abbey Estate Tramway Trail
**Type:** Walk | **Location:** Ticknall, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom
**Murphy & Me Rating:** 4.5/5 (space, sniff factor, facilities, ease)
## About
Murphy's getting better at walking past other dogs without treating them like a climbing frame, which is progress — though the start of the Tramway Trail did test that resolve. The car park and first stretch were busy, but once we got further into the route it opened up beautifully. Long, straight paths with good visibility made off-lead time easy and safe, though there are a couple of road crossings to watch for if your dog's still working on recall.

The route itself is a mix: gravel paths, woodland sections, and open countryside, all well-marked and easy to follow. Some parts require leads because of sheep grazing nearby — signage is clear, and the diversions are short. You can make a stop at the Ferrers Centre or Milking Parlou roughly halfway round, which would break the walk up nicely.

It's a shared-use path, so cyclists do pass so worth keeping an ear out if your dog's off-lead. There were also signs asking people to keep dogs out of the ponds to protect the habitat, which seemed fair enough given the number of benches and water sources dotted along the route for proper hydration breaks instead.

We covered just over five and a half miles in two and a half hours, which felt about right for Murphy's energy levels. The café at the end has dog bowls with a tap, toilets, and — crucially — dog ice cream, which Murphy declared an essential part of any post-walk routine. National Trust members get in free; non-members pay £7.40 for adults, £3.70 for children, or £21.25 for a family ticket. You can also hire bikes, e-bikes, and even a dog trailer if that's your thing, and the estate itself is worth exploring if you've got time to extend the walk.

## Murphy's Verdict
*Reviewed by Murphy, Cavapoo and chief sniff tester at Murphy & Me — The Dog Edit*
> "Excellent start-to-finish adventure with just enough off-lead zoomies, perfectly timed snack stops, and only mild sheep-related disappointment when the lead went back on — would absolutely hire the dog trailer next time just to see what happens 🐾"
