## About
We got the full four seasons at Beacon Hill in one visit — torrential downpour followed by glorious sunshine, sometimes within the same ten minutes. Murphy's response to the rain was to plant himself firmly under a tree and refuse to continue until a couple of passing dogs trotted past looking unbothered, at which point he apparently decided getting wet was fine after all.

Beacon Hill has genuinely good facilities for a hilltop park — two car parks, toilets, and a café at the lower car park that we made a point of visiting afterwards. Parking isn't free (£2.50–£5.50 depending on how long you stay, ours came to £4.00), and if you're struggling to find the card reader like I was, it's tucked underneath where the pin pad is. Worth knowing before you're stood there confused in the rain. Car parks open at 7am, with closing times that shift through the year — 8pm between May and August, earlier the rest of the time, so check before you set off.

The walk itself is just under 2 miles and took us about an hour, with a steady incline the whole way up. It's not a difficult walk unless mobility is a genuine concern. There's a tarmac path all the way to the top if you'd rather skip the ferns, but we couldn't resist cutting through them on the way back down. Benches are dotted along the route if you need a breather, and there are poo bins.

It's a popular spot, but the paths are wide enough that passing other dogs doesn't turn into a drama, and there are plenty of smaller routes off the main stretch if you've got a nervous or reactive dog who'd rather have their own space for a bit. At the top, Murphy had a proper clamber over the rocks with views stretching towards Loughborough and Nottingham — very Pride Rock, if Pride Rock came with a car park.

There's usually a stream running through the bottom of the route, but the recent hot weather had dried it up completely when we visited, so don't rely on it for a splash. If you want to make a longer day of it, the route connects through to Broombriggs Farm and Outwoods. And when you're done — there's an ice cream van in the car park, which felt like exactly the right way to end it.
