There's a coffee shop with pupachinnos waiting in the Beacon Hill car park at the end of the walk, which is exactly the kind of detail that changes how you feel about an autumn walk. Murphy spent part of that visit refusing to move from under a tree in torrential rain, then got going again purely because other dogs walked past and he couldn't bear to be left out. That's autumn in Leicestershire in one sentence — glorious one minute, tipping it down the next, and your dog's paws paying the price either way.

What we got tired of, honestly, was the post-walk clean-up. The towel-by-the-door routine, the paw wipes, the bath because a 'quick walk' turned into a bog crossing. So this Mini Edit is specifically about the routes that hold their shape when the rest of the county turns to sludge — wide paths, gravel tracks, proper hard standing underfoot, the kind of walk where you come home and just... don't need the towel.

We haven't picked these for scenery, though there's plenty of it. We've picked them because Candice has walked every one of them in bad weather on purpose, specifically to see what happened to the ground. Some, like Thornton Reservoir and the Calke Abbey Tramway Trail, are gravel from start to finish. Others earn their place because the main routes stay manageable even when it's been raining for a week. A couple of them also happen to have something waiting for you at the end, which never hurts.

One of these — Calke Abbey — technically sits just over the border in Derbyshire rather than Leicestershire proper, but it's close enough to the county line and good enough underfoot that it's stayed on our regular list regardless.
