🌿 New Hall Valley Country Park – Sutton Coldfield

🐾 Open meadows, a peaceful stream, woodland cut-throughs and enough different routes to make every visit feel different. New Hall Valley is one of those places we never get bored of coming back to. 💚

Just a mile from the centre of Sutton Coldfield, New Hall Valley Country Park covers around 200 acres and somehow manages to feel miles away from the town. 🌳🌾 With open fields, wetlands, woodland and Plants Brook winding its way through the middle, it's one of our favourite places when we just fancy stretching our legs, getting the dogs out and enjoying a bit of nature. 💚

This park is particularly special to us because it's where Rufus and Poppy spent the first few years of their lives. 🐶❤️ It was our local walk for years, so coming back always feels a little nostalgic. The paths might be familiar, but there's always something new to sniff or explore. My mum and dad still live just down the road, so we often find ourselves back here, especially during the school holidays when my niece joins us for a walk. She loves being outdoors just as much as the dogs. 🌿

There's a small but free car park located just off Wylde Green Road. 🅿️ If you're lucky enough to live nearby though, there are lots of different access points into the park on foot.

One of our favourite things about New Hall Valley is the variety... (do you sense a theme with the walks we love? 😂) Most of the main paths are surfaced and easy to walk, but there are also little cut-throughs through the trees and across the fields, so it's easy to make each walk a little different. 🌿🐾

This morning we followed the lower path alongside Plants Brook. 💧 The gentle sound of the stream, birds singing overhead and countless interesting smells made for a lovely relaxed walk... although the fields were definitely looking a lot less green than the last time we visited! Rufus was particularly impressed with the amount of pee-mail that needed reading... and replying to. 📬🐶

There's another path running higher up through the park, which you can reach either via the boardwalk or by cutting across the open fields. 🌾 We actually prefer this upper route if the park is busy because it's much more open, making it easier to create space if you need to.

The park is incredibly popular with local dog walkers, and we met lots of lovely dogs this morning. 🐕❤️ We've genuinely never had anything but friendly encounters here, but it's worth knowing that many dogs are walked off lead. If your dog is nervous or easily overwhelmed (like our Evie can sometimes be), weekday mornings are definitely the quieter option compared with weekends or the after-work rush.

One of the things we really love about New Hall Valley is how friendly everyone is. 😊🐾 It always seems to be one of those places where people stop for a chat while the dogs have a sniff, and it's lovely to pass the time of day with fellow dog owners. There's a real community feel here, which makes every visit feel welcoming.

The park also forms part of the National Cycle Network, so you'll often come across cyclists sharing the paths. 🚴 That's one of the reasons Rufus stays on his lead here. Ever since he was a puppy, he's been convinced bicycles are highly suspicious creatures that deserve very close supervision... and on the odd occasion he's even tried to give chase! 😂🐾

If you keep your eyes peeled, there's loads of wildlife to spot. 🦆🦋 We regularly see birds, butterflies and squirrels... and on one visit just a few weeks ago we even spotted a deer quietly making its way across one of the fields. 🦌✨

There are plenty of bins around the park, but no public toilets, so it's worth planning ahead. One thing to bear in mind is that whichever route you choose, the paths eventually meet roads, so a reliable recall (or a lead) is definitely important.

If you're interested in local history, head up across the fields towards the upper path and you'll come across New Hall Mill, an 18th-century working watermill tucked away amongst the trees. 🏡 It opens on selected days throughout the year, although dogs aren't allowed inside the mill itself.

And if all that walking has worked up an appetite, The Bark Bistro sits right on the edge of the park. ☕🐾 It's the perfect place to stop for coffee and one of Poppy's all-time favourite puppuchinos... (check out her review if you don't believe us! 😂)

New Hall Valley might not have dramatic hills or spectacular viewpoints, but that's exactly why we love it. It's peaceful, full of wildlife and offers so many different ways to explore that we've never got bored of walking here... even after all these years. 💚🐾
