🏰 Tamworth Castle Grounds – Tamworth

🐾 A little bit of everything right in the heart of Tamworth – riverside paths, bridges, open grass, beautiful flowers and, of course, Tamworth Castle sitting proudly in the background. It's one of those walks where you can make it as short or as long as you fancy, weaving in and out of the different areas as you go. 🌿💚

After a busy weekend of some big walks, Rufus and Poppy took one look at me this morning when I said "walkies"... and promptly went back to their beds. 😂 So, it was just me and Evie heading down to the Castle Grounds for a quieter morning wander.

When it's just the two of us, we like to come first thing in the morning when it's nice and quiet. It's actually a great place for confidence building with a nervous dog because there's so much to see and experience without needing to do a huge distance. 🌳🐾 There are paths, bridges, people, dogs, water, open spaces, playgrounds and plenty of wildlife – lots of little opportunities to practise taking everything in at your own pace.

That said, it can get very busy at peak times, although always in a lovely, lively way. If you've got a nervous or easily overwhelmed dog, it's worth bearing in mind that there's a lot going on when the Castle Grounds are busy. We'd definitely recommend quieter mornings if your dog needs a little more space.

And if you're planning a Saturday morning walk, avoid 9–10am, as that's when the Parkrun takes place. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

We usually start our walk at Tamworth Castle, the town's impressive Norman castle, 🏰 and then wander around the bandstand, taking in all the beautiful flowers surrounding it. 🌸🌺 Evie absolutely loves this bit – weaving up and down and in and out of the flower beds like she's on some sort of very important investigative mission, with the castle in the background. 🐶

From there we cross over the river and wander along beside the playgrounds and the lovely open grassy areas. 🌳💧 There's plenty of space here for dogs to have a sniff and explore, while the different paths mean you can easily change your route if one area is busier than another.

We then head across the metal bridge – a part of the walk that Evie is still very much undecided about! 😂🐾 She'll happily investigate pretty much anything, but the metal bridge is apparently still under review. Once we're over, we change direction and head back towards the Castle Grounds, which takes us over the large bridge. From here, you get a lovely view down to where the River Tame and River Anker meet. 🌊✨

Although Evie is usually on a mission to sniff, investigate and explore absolutely everything, she also loves to just sit and watch. 🐶👀 So we always find a bench somewhere, sit down for a few minutes and take in the fresh air, watch the wildlife and enjoy the fact that we live somewhere with all of this right on our doorstep. 💚

There are bins dotted around the Castle Grounds, which makes it easy to keep things tidy, and there are also public toilets near the playground, which is handy if you're making more of a family day of it. 🚮🚻

If you're not local, there are plenty of places to park around the Castle Grounds and town centre, so getting here for a walk is relatively easy. 🚗🅿️

And, of course, no Castle Grounds walk is complete without a trip to No.18 café. ☕🐾 It's become our little tradition whenever we're walking around the Castle. It's dog friendly and has a lovely little courtyard out the back, which is our preferred place to sit.

There aren't any puppuchinos on the menu yet... but we continue to have a quiet word every time we visit. 😂☕🐶 I'm sure Poppy would be more than happy to personally test them if they ever make an appearance.

Tamworth Castle Grounds might not be a huge countryside walk, but that's not really what it's trying to be. It's brilliant for a quick morning wander, confidence building, people-watching, wildlife spotting or simply reminding yourself that you don't always need to get in the car to find somewhere lovely to walk. 🏰🌿🐾

And for us, there's something rather special about being able to walk through the heart of the town, past a Norman castle, along the rivers and through the flowers... before finishing with a hot chocolate. That's a pretty good morning. ❤️

"Flowers to investigate, bridges to conquer and lots of things to watch... although I'm still not sure about that metal bridge. 🤔🐾 Mum says we'll keep practising. I also like to go to the café afterwards like a proper grown-up dog and sit nicely in the courtyard while Mum has her hot chocolate. ☕🐶"
