Appleby Dog Park is only about 8 miles from Tamworth and, for us, it's a straight 15-minute drive with barely ever any traffic – which makes it one of our go-to parks when the dogs need a good midweek run. πŸ’šπŸΎ It's also perfect for early mornings when we're having a heatwave like today! β˜€οΈ We can get there before the day really warms up, let Evie burn off some of her endless energy and still be home before it gets too hot. One of the things we really like about this field is the way the grass is managed. 🌾 Rather than everything being cut short, lots of it is deliberately left long, with natural paths running through it. Evie absolutely LOVES this. πŸ˜‚πŸΆ She bounds through the long grass like she's starring in her own countryside adventure, disappearing into it and popping back out again with the biggest grin. Once you're inside, the four acres stretch down the field, so rather than following one set route, we tend to walk around in loops, taking a different little path each time. 🌿🐾 There's something quite nice about not really having a route to follow – you can just wander, sniff and let the dogs decide where you're going. There is some agility equipment too, but if we're honest, this isn't usually the reason we come here. This is our "let's just be outside and off lead" field – particularly for Evie! πŸΆπŸ’¨ When she needs to burn off some energy midweek, this is an easy choice. But I think there's something about the simplicity of this place that I like just as much as the dogs do. If I've had a lot going on at work or I'm feeling stressed, I'll book an evening slot, bundle the three of them into the car and head here. There's no route to follow, nowhere we need to be and nothing we need to achieve – just an aimless wander around the field while the dogs sniff, run and explore. And if I'm honest, I think that wander is just as much for me as it is for them. πŸ’šπŸΎ Booking is really straightforward and, for our three, it's Β£5 for 25 minutes or Β£10 for 50 minutes. πŸ’· There's a little car park that fits around two cars, and the field has a secure gate. Your entry code is sent through an hour before your booking. πŸ” There's also a little shed with a couple of camping chairs and some dog biscuits, πŸͺ‘πŸΎ plus bins dotted around the field and drinking water available. We've also heard a little rumour that a sensory garden might be coming soon... πŸ‘€πŸŒΏ so we'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that! The field has lovely countryside views to one side, 🌾🌳 so even though you're only a short drive from Tamworth, it feels really peaceful once you're in there. There's something about this place that just feels uncomplicated – easy to book, easy to get to, easy to park and easy to just be there. πŸ’šπŸΎ There is one thing I'd definitely mention though: if it's been raining and the field is muddy, think carefully before booking. And I say that from personal experience... Last February, after a particularly rainy spell, I took Rufus and Poppy here and Poppy unfortunately slipped in the mud and damaged her cruciate ligament. πŸ’”πŸΎ This absolutely wasn't the park's fault, and we've been countless times since Poppy recovered. The website now has a pop-up warning when the field has been experiencing wet weather, advising people to take the mud into consideration before booking, and you have to close the warning before you can book. πŸ‘ I actually think that's a really useful addition, and I'd definitely recommend taking the warning seriously if the weather has been particularly wet. I share Poppy's story not to put anyone off this field, but simply because it's something I'd have appreciated knowing before that particular visit.
