Natural Hounds falls firmly into the second category.

When Murphy was younger, we fed him a raw diet, and Natural Hounds quickly became our go-to local stockist. The difference compared to the larger chains was obvious straight away. Rather than rows of the same products from the same suppliers, the shelves were packed with carefully chosen food, natural treats and enrichment products that had clearly been selected because someone believed in them.

Over time, we found ourselves returning again and again.

Not just for food, but for rabbit ears, pig ears, yak chews, enrichment treats, lick mats, toys and all the other things Murphy somehow manages to convince us he desperately needs.

The shop itself feels different too.

Rather than trying to stock everything for everyone, Natural Hounds focuses on quality. The range is carefully curated, the advice is honest, and there's a genuine feeling that the wellbeing of dogs comes first.

And that's largely down to Mary.

Anyone can sell dog treats. What makes Natural Hounds stand out is the knowledge and care behind the counter.

Mary takes the time to get to know both dogs and owners, remembers previous conversations, and is always happy to offer advice without any pressure to buy something you don't need.

In fact, one of the moments that really stuck with us came when we ran out of food Murphy would actually eat and couldn't get to the shop during opening hours. We gave Natural Hounds a call, paid over the phone, and Mary kindly dropped the order off on her way home.

That's not something you'd expect from a large retailer.

That's the sort of service you get from someone who genuinely cares about the dogs they're helping.

Even now, if we pop in without Murphy, Mary still asks how he's getting on. As fellow puppy owners who were navigating many of the same challenges at the same time, there's always been a sense that she cares about the dogs as much as the products she sells.

For us, that's what makes Natural Hounds special.

It's a local independent business doing things differently.

Knowledge over sales.

Quality over quantity.

Dogs before profit.
