- There's a coffee shop with pupachinnos waiting in the Beacon Hill car park at the end of the walk, which is exactly the kind of detail that changes how you feel about an autumn walk. Murphy spent part of that visit refusing to move from under a tree in torrential rain, then got going again purely because other dogs walked past and he couldn't bear to be left out. That's autumn in Leicestershire in one sentence — glorious one minute, tipping it down the next, and your dog's paws paying the price either way.

What we got tired of, honestly, was the post-walk clean-up. The towel-by-the-door routine, the paw wipes, the bath because a 'quick walk' turned into a bog crossing. So this Mini Edit is specifically about the routes that hold their shape when the rest of the county turns to sludge — wide paths, gravel tracks, proper hard standing underfoot, the kind of walk where you come home and just... don't need the towel.

We haven't picked these for scenery, though there's plenty of it. We've picked them because Candice has walked every one of them in bad weather on purpose, specifically to see what happened to the ground. Some, like Thornton Reservoir and the Calke Abbey Tramway Trail, are gravel from start to finish. Others earn their place because the main routes stay manageable even when it's been raining for a week. A couple of them also happen to have something waiting for you at the end, which never hurts.

One of these — Calke Abbey — technically sits just over the border in Derbyshire rather than Leicestershire proper, but it's close enough to the county line and good enough underfoot that it's stayed on our regular list regardless.

- There's a sandpit at Camp Timbertail that's become something of a landmark on repeat visits — the spot where Murphy set up what he called a 'tactical headquarters' and launched 'several successful missions' from it. That's not the kind of detail you get from a directory entry reading '9 acres, secure fencing, off lead available'. You only get it from going back, more than once, until a field or a stretch of woodland becomes familiar enough that the dogs start acting like they own the place.

What ties these five together isn't just the postcode, though they're all within easy reach of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Tamworth. It's that each one solves a different version of the same problem — somewhere secure, properly fenced, with no worry about loose dogs, livestock or roads, where a dog can be fully off lead and fully themselves. Some of that is running-around space. Some of it is nose work. Some of it is just letting a dog wander a meadow at their own pace without needing to justify why they're not doing anything in particular.

Their rankings and complaints run through this whole round-up, and they don't agree on everything, which is exactly why it's useful — a field that's peaceful and good for wandering isn't the same as one that's good for hide and seek, and knowing the difference before you book saves everyone a wasted session.

Worth saying upfront: these are private, bookable fields, not open access land, so check booking slots and locations before you turn up. And at least one of them turns to proper mud after rain, which is the kind of detail that matters more than any amount of acreage.

What ties these six together is that none of them treat the dog menu as an afterthought. Bark and Brew in Mountsorrel is, by its own logic, a dog café that happens to let humans in. The Stables at Staunton Harold has a Full Hound breakfast with Murphy's name basically on it. Grounds Café at Snibston Colliery has a Paws of Fame wall and a furry friends menu with pork liver sprinkles on the pawpuccino. These aren't places doing the bare minimum — they're places that have decided the dog is a customer too.

Autumn is when this actually matters. A dry café with a filled water bowl and a puppachino on the way is a very different proposition in November than it is in June, and several of these are either part of the walk itself or close enough to one that you can plan the whole outing around the stop-off. The Stables sits right by the Staunton Harold grounds. Grounds Café is on-site at Snibston Colliery. This is a list for the days when the walk was the excuse and the café was always the point.

All six have been visited, all six have been fed a puppachino to Murphy, and all six passed judgement accordingly — some more enthusiastically than others, but none of them faked it.

- At Mucky Paws in Yoxall, you can drive your car straight through the entrance gate and let your dog out inside the field, rather than doing the usual car-park scramble of leads and treats and hoping nothing bolts. It's a small design detail, but it tells you something about who these fields are actually built for — the dogs whose owners have already had the bad car park moment somewhere else and would quite like not to repeat it.

That's the thread running through this shortlist. Some dogs are still working on recall and need somewhere to get it wrong safely. Some just want acres of space without another dog's face in theirs. Some would happily never see a lead again in their life. A secure field solves a different problem depending on which dog you've got, which is exactly why we've gone looking for the ones that actually deliver — proper fencing, proper space, and in a couple of cases, proper thought put into how you get in and out without a scene at the gate.

We're not pretending all five visits went perfectly. One of these didn't, and we're saying so, because a secure field is only worth the money if the security and the upkeep match what you're paying for. The rest range from agility playgrounds with treat walls to a paddock so open and quiet that Murphy called it his happy place. Take what suits your dog — that's the whole point of a field you don't have to share.
